Last year’s outstanding festival marked the 25th anniversary of Bath Mozartfest. How could we follow that in 2016?
Well, follow it we did, with 9-days of glorious music-making. Reviewing for The Sunday Times, Hugh Canning said ‘Mozart in Bath was breathtaking’ – we are delighted to agree.
It’s almost impossible to pick out highlights, but the performance which lured London critics and ensured the earliest sell-out was baritone Roderick Williams ‘gripping account’ of Schubert’s Winterreisse, accompanied by the Roger Vignoles’s ‘subtle and stylish piano playing’. Who knew that Lied in Bath on a cold and wet Tuesday in November could attract such enthusiastic crowds?
Another success story was the lunchtime series of one hour concerts. Full houses paid tribute to the wonderful cello and piano combination of fast rising stars Leonard Elschenbroich and Peter Limonov. And The Sunday Times described the concert by Michael Collins (‘arguably Britain’s finest clarinettist)’ and pianist Michael McHale as ‘an exhilarating hour of music-making’ which ‘had to be heard to be believed’.
The following day it was the turn of a relatively rare piano duet to take the plaudits. Fiona Maddocks, writing for The Observer, said that ‘inquisitive joy’ shaped the concert given by Simon Crawford-Phillips and Philip Moore.
It was wonderful to see so many children in the audience for our first Saturday afternoon family concert. Actor Sam West and pianist Tim Horton vividly portrayed Prokofiev’s story of Peter and the Wolf, and then Poulenc’s Babar the Elephant. And quite a few of the more mature audience members clearly engaged happily with their inner child!
The Mozartfest Team thanks everyone who attended and supported this year’s festival.
Please check listings week commencing Monday 19 December to relive some of the best concerts recorded by BBC Radio 3. And please put next year’s dates in your diary: Friday 10 to Saturday 18 November 2017.
Meantime, we will look forward to seeing you in February at the Bath Bachfest (16-18 February 2017)
